Duck End Barns Kitchen

Curating harmony between architecture and nature

Set within the Cambridgeshire countryside, this home establishes a considered relationship with its setting. Contemporary in its expression, yet grounded in its landscape, the property represents a disciplined approach to living alongside nature rather than imposing upon it. As part of this architecturally driven project, Nicholas Anthony was invited to design a culinary space that would align with the clarity and integrity of the wider scheme; one defined by precision, restraint and a seamless integration of form, function, and environment.

Excellence at every turn

Every aspect of the home has been carefully conceived to respect its environmental context. Energy-efficient, sustainably sourced and circular in its thinking, including an integrated system that recycles all water used throughout the house, the project reflects a rigorous commitment to responsible design. Working closely with the homeowners, Nicholas Anthony’s award-winning designer, Susan Humphries, shaped a kitchen that moves beyond expectation, responding precisely to the architectural intent while supporting the principles that underpin the house as a whole.

Hidden functionality

Running along the central axis of the ground floor, a concealed space forms the organisational core of the home. Enclosed by functional walls on all sides, it defines and mediates the transition between living and dining spaces. Within it, a combined pantry, utility and chef’s kitchen accommodates the operational heart of the property. Integrated sinks and dishwashers, continuous worktops with carefully specified appliances, a large stainless steel fridge and freezer, and generous, discreet storage all ensure that essential functions are contained and resolved without interrupting the calm of the surrounding spaces.

Sliding doors

Screened from the wider home by a large, custom-designed sliding door spanning 1200mm, this concealed space opens selectively onto the kitchen beyond. The outward-facing elevations are treated as architectural partitions, framing the open side of the kitchen while maintaining visual control. Composed of black oak cabinetry punctuated with bronze doors, the joinery integrates cooking appliances with measured precision. A breakfast area can be closed from view when required, while a dishwasher positioned at waist height reinforces the project’s emphasis on ergonomic performance and considered daily use.

Quiet confidence

A four-metre-long island anchors the space; its scale balanced by a disciplined material palette that echoes the black oak and bronze of the surrounding cabinetry. Through the innovative use of concealed steel supports, the island achieves a sense of visual lightness, appearing to hover despite its substantial presence. Finished with an ultra-hard-wearing worktop in sintered stone, it incorporates a hob with integrated downdraft extraction on one side, while the other is oriented towards informal gathering. Burnt orange-toned bar stools introduce a subtle warmth, referencing the copper hues of the structural pillars and establishing a quiet dialogue with the carefully selected trees outside.

A colour that speaks volumes

The use of burnt orange as a signature accent throughout the property is a deliberate architectural choice. Contemporary yet materially grounded, the hue introduces warmth and depth without overwhelming the spatial composition. Its earthen character recalls oxidised metals and fired clay, creating a dialogue between structure and atmosphere while maintaining clarity of form. As an autumnal tone associated with transition and renewal, burnt orange reinforces the idea of the home as an evolving framework; one that balances restraint with energy and signals a thoughtful approach to a new era of living.

Light appeal

Floor-to-ceiling glazing draws the garden and wider landscape into the interior, allowing generous natural light to animate the space throughout the day. This abundance of daylight enables the deeper, more muted tones of the palette to be held with confidence, lending the interior a sense of composure and quiet gravitas. Carefully considered lighting further shapes the atmosphere: calibrated light temperatures establish mood, while sculptural fittings contribute to the spatial language. Among them, the iconic Occhio Mito Largo forms a poised presence above the armchairs, reinforcing the dialogue between function, form and ambience.

A masterful vision

This home stands as a study in quiet control, where precision of detail and a unified design ethos elevate it beyond aesthetic appeal alone. Every space is conceived in dialogue with the next, creating a coherent architectural language that feels both deliberate and resolved. Unapologetically modern in its expression, the property nonetheless possesses the restraint, clarity and confidence required to endure, timeless not through decoration, but through intent.
