“We opted for a contemporary room scheme to give the wow factor and act as a contrast to the rest of the house”

This contemporary spaces uses Y-Line handleless cabinetry in Brilliant Crystal (base units), Brilliant Cubanit (tall units), Brilliant Silver Brown (on the island), and Brilliant Oak Coloured Black (on the panel behind the TV) to stunning effect. The units are all from the Nicholas Anthony Signature Collection.

“We opted for a contemporary room scheme to give the wow factor and act as a contrast to the rest of the house. I had a very clear idea of what I wanted for the layout in that it was a rectangular room with two sides of glass, and a third with two doors leading into the room. This restricted where the kitchen could be positioned within the room as we only had one wall available. I wanted a line of cupboards and a big island. Sue, the designer at Nicholas Anthony, suggested using the space between the two doors for the cooling appliances, which was a great idea,” explains Jules Routledge, the owner.

The couple had already re-roofed, rewired, re-plumbed, replastered and redecorated the whole property. The front of the house is traditional looking but the new extension added at the back is modern. The previous kitchen was a galley style that wasn’t big enough for a family of five. The family couldn’t fit a kitchen table in it and there wasn’t an island. As they had moved from a house with a larger kitchen they knew that we wanted to create a big family space.

“I liked the simplicity of this kitchen at Nicholas Anthony. Sue Humphries, the designer at the Cambridge showroom was so personable and had lots of great ideas,” explains Jules.

The clients chose a green/grey palette as they went with the colours already within the house. Aquamarine was used as an accent colour. “It took me ages to decide on the splashback colour though, which is a dark charcoal. I knew I wanted a darker finish on the island with a light worktop.”

The hob area is set forward from the rest of the wall units and in a lighter finish, making it really unique. “I saw the idea in the Nicholas Anthony showroom and really liked it. I had seen the Aquamarine at my hairdressers and loved it; I knew I wanted to add another colour and then I saw the red chairs at the shop where we bought our dining table. I knew they would be enough of a contrast to complement it well.”

“Sue was excellent and I couldn’t fault Nicholas Anthony; they were brilliant. As was their kitchen fitter, he was fabulous. In fact we ended up getting Nicholas Anthony to fit out our utility room too, which is in our old kitchen. I would recommend them without hesitation.”
